We enjoyed our trip to Stockholm (via Hamburg & Copenhagen) by train last year, that we couldn’t wait to organise another adventure.
Just a couple of weeks after we’d got back, we decided to aim for Italy.
The first thought was to travel completely round the coast by train. But -as we found out – Italy’s quite large and, if we did that, we wouldn’t actually see very much – except from a train window.
So we eventually decided on Genoa. Mainly because it’s not high on most tourists’ agendas and it’s close to Cinque Terre & we both wanted to see that bit of coastline.
So, here’s our agenda…
Saturday 1st October:
Gillingham to London Waterloo – British Rail
London Waterloo to St Pancras – London Underground
London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord – Eurostar
Paris Gare du Nord to Paris Gare de Lyon – Paris Metro
Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon – SNCF TGV
We’ll spend Saturday night, all day Sunday and Sunday night in Lyon.
Monday October 3rd:
Lyon to Milan Garibaldi Station – SNCF TGV
Milan Garibaldi to Milan Central Station – on foot (we want to soak up a bit of the Italian atmosphere).
Milan Central to Genoa -ItalRail
Saturday 8th October:
Genoa Airport to London Gatwick – British Airways
London Gatwick to Gillingham – British Rail
